As a child we didn’t live too far away from a cherry orchard. My parents were canners and during the summer, they would can deliciously sweet fruits like cherries, peaches, and pears. When cherry season came, we would take our bushels and head to the nearby cherry farm where we were able to climb the trees like monkeys and pick and choose our own cherries. It’s every kids’ dream to climb trees; especially without getting scolded for doing so.

Down the street from our home today, our neighbor has a large cherry tree in their front yard. I love watching the tree blossom in the spring and then turn to budding cherries. The branches arch over the sidewalk like the Golden Gate Bridge. Each time I pass by, I reflect back on those days of climbing trees and picking cherries. As I stroll by, I’ll pluck a few cherries and pop one in my mouth, swirling it about my tongue and teeth as I chew around the pit and spit it out. I know, it’s very lady-like of me. But who cares? I sure don’t.
