Protein Berry Power Smoothie

I’ve been spending waaaaay too much money on┬áJamba Juices. They are so awesome, but at about six bucks a pop for a power-size smoothie, it’s a money drainer. So today I concocted my own Protein Berry Power Smoothie and it rocks! It’s full of calcium, protein, Vitamin C, with a whole array of other crucial nutrients.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup crushed ice
  • 1 cup unsweetened strawberries, frozen
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 16 oz. vanilla soy milk (or milk substitute)
  • One scoop whey or soy protein powder

OPTIONALS:

  • Add 3-5 whole almonds for extra Vitamin E, potassium, zinc, iron, magnesium and fiber!
  • Add 1/2 tablespoon of flax seed for the added benefits of Omega-3s and fiber!
  • For a sweeter treat, add honey or Agave to the mix to taste; or add sweetened strawberries

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a blender, combine crushed ice, strawberries, banana, milk, and protein powder to the blender;
  2. Cover and blend ingredients until smooth, stopping, if necessary, to scrape down the sides
  3. Pour into a cup and drink!

Nothing packs a bigger nutritional punch than strawberries! They have higher levels of vitamin C, fiber, folate, potassium and antioxidants than most other fruits like apples and oranges. Studies have shown that eating a serving of strawberries a day significantly decreases blood pressure and reduces the risk of cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Bananas are also a great source of fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, potassium and manganese.

Soy milk is a great source of selenium, copper, magnesium and protein! Adding whey protein to the mix provides a source of amino acids for the body, making it a great meal replacement or athletic recovery drink after a hard workout.

Go ahead…drink it up!
